The old forge

Thomas Garrow shod horses at this hearth from 1887 to 1961. We light it every afternoon and cook on nothing else.

The long table

  • Seats 12 to 20
  • Menus at $65 and $85 a head
  • The whole room, 38 seats, on Mondays and Tuesdays

Detail of a painted still life: a cut meat pie, sliced lemon and bread on pewter platesThe long table sits under the forge’s old bellows, a few steps from the fire. The kitchen cooks one shared menu for it: bread from the hearth, a shoulder from the ash, every dish passed down the table.

Choose the $65 menu or the $85 one with oysters and the short rib; wine starts at $34 a bottle. On Mondays and Tuesdays, when we are closed, the whole room can be yours.

Good to know

Do you take walk-ins?

Yes. The six seats at the counter, facing the fire, are never booked. On Fridays and Saturdays they go by six, so come early.

Can you cook around allergies?

Most of them, if you tell us when you book. Everything shares one fire and one grill, so we cannot promise a kitchen free of nuts, gluten or shellfish.

Is there much without meat?

About half the menu. Everything cooked in the embers is a vegetable, and with a day’s notice the kitchen will cook a vegetable menu for the whole table.

Are children welcome?

Always, and best before eight. We have high chairs, a small flatbread for anyone under ten, and marshmallows to toast at the table.

Can I bring my own wine?

On Wednesdays and Thursdays, for $20 a bottle, up to two bottles a table.

How do I find you?

We are at 9 Cutler Street, where it meets the footbridge, behind the brick chimney. Parking on Mill Lane is free after six. The yard door has no step, and so does the restroom.

Do you sell gift cards?

From $25, sent by email or picked up at the counter, and they never run out. Email us for one.
